That trip is an annual pilgrimage of mine for the past 20 plus years and I have never made it with a single one night layover (Halfway Point). I depart Colorado Springs at 0500 with a full thermos of coffee and pull into Raton for a potty stop and gas at Raton. Santa Fe is the "End of the Trail" with lunch, shopping and an overnight stay.
Day two gets me as far as Flagstaff for shopping (with a prior shopping stop at Gallup and a couple of side trips thrown in.) After a good night's sleep it is off to Vegas for a two night stay that includes some quality time at the tables and a show of some kind. On day five we get up late in Oceanside to begin the holiday The retreat from California is a virtual flashback with the exception of New Mexico where we throw in an extra overnight stay in Albuquerque for the Balloon Festival before heading to Colorado to bunker down for the winter. Only the young who are in a rush worry about halfway points. Slow down, relax and enjoy.
If you're taking the northern route through Amarillo, Goodnight is about halfway. If you're taking the southern route through Lubbock, Shallowater is about halfway.
California which also takes any unused share left over by other states. The Compact will be review by the Department of the Interior in 2016 and the Supreme Court will probably be forced to rule again on the allocations. There is simply not enough water to sustain southern California's growth.
If traveling by road in a northern route (I76 to I80) then Chicago would be the closest large city at the halfway mark. It taking the southern route (to avoid Chicago and tolls) (I79 to I70 to I465 to I74 to I80) then Bloomington, Il would closest to the halfway mark.

The distance to halfway from each of the numbers can be found by taking half the difference of the numbers: (70,458 - 21,639)/2 = 24,409.5, so the halfway number is 48,819 from either numbers. To find the actually halfway number, just add (or subtract) that distance:21,639 + 24,409.5 = 46048.570,458 - 24,409.5 = 46048.546,048.5 is halfway between 21,639 and 70,458.
49 miles taking I-10 EAST.
