The Teac 2340 is a 1/4" open reel tape recorder. Once a very common high quality recording format, it is now becoming largely redundant. 1/4" tape is not as widely available as it was some years ago but it is still around and stocked by a few specialist suppliers. Remember that magnetic tape has always been expensive. A 10.5" reel of tape is likely to cost a similar amount to a low cost MP3 recorder and will not store as much audio as the MP3 player. The signal stored on tape also decays over time and is sensitive to damp and temperature changes. Despite the problems, there is still something about open reel tape decks that makes them appealing.
