ther is a sensor under the hood by the thermostat that controls it. advanced auto or auto zone carries the part. i just did it on my 01 ls.
Idle the engine, remove the temp sensor wire on the engine and ground it. If the gauge does not move one can assume it has failed.
Could be lots of things. You should have it checked for codes. The temp gauge problem would make me think of a possible temp sensor problem. It should be located near the thermostat housing.
Replace sending unit
