Armed neutrality is when a state takes neither side in a war, but will defend itself from any subsequent actions against it by either side. The state maintains military readiness that will allow it to act quickly, if the situation warrants it. The League of Armed Neutrality was organized in 1780 by Catherine the Great and other minor naval powers to protect neutral shipping in the American Revolutionary War.
