An assault is to threaten with words or take a swing at a person either with your fists or an object. Battery is actually hitting the person.
Arrested? Yes. Convicted? Not if the assault was a felony, or against a domestic partner.

Of the current New England Patriots players, the only one I know of that has been previously is Leigh Bodden, who, according to wikipedia, got arrested for "resisting arrest, failing to comply with an officer and a traffic offense" in 2007 when he was with the Cleveland Browns.
