Havanna Harbor
Havana Harbor.
The disagreement between US and Spain about battle ship Maine occurred during the Spanish American war. The battleship Maine was attacked in Havana harbor and it caused the start of the Spanish American war.
At the time, Americans were on a very expansionistic path. They felt they had to start competing with the Imperialistic nations of Europe, and the remains of the Spanish empire looked like a great place to start. Tensions were very high, and when the American battleship Maine exploded in Havana harbor, it provided a spark to light the fire of war.
Central Maine Community College's motto is 'A great place to start'.
Because American territory was attacked (The USS Maine battleship was blown up in Havana harbor). Spanish saboutage was suspected at the time.
BB-63, the Battleship Missouri. BB-39, the Battleship Arizona.
The blowing up of the USS Maine battleship in Havana Harbor. While the US government at the time claimed that the Spanish had blown up the Maine with a mine, historians have since suggested that it is unlikely that a mine caused the sinking. Instead they suggest that spontaneous combustion of coal on board the ship was to blame, or that the US government itself blew up the Maine in order to have an excuse to start a war with the Spanish. This tactic is known as a "false flag" operation.
