The Bay of Pigs incident occurred in April of 1861 and consisted of an invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles (members of the Democratic Revolutionary Front) who had been trained, and were also supported, by American military personnel and the CIA. The defenders were Cubans standing up for the socialist state which had been established by Fidel Castro several years prior after a protracted civil war in the island-nation.
