I think that refers to a big money waste/things that suck in money.
People would go around selling 'indulgences' or 'god's tokens' in the Black Death for people who had sinned and wanted to make it up to god so he wouldn't curse them with the plague. Of course it didn't stop them getting the plague so preists made a lot of money out of them!

Society changed immensely because the plague killed off most of the serfs who worked the fields for the land owners. Without this cheap labor, the landowners who survived could not care for their holdings on their own, and so, many of them simply abandoned the land, leaving it to the surviving serfs. With less people to feed, the survivors thrived and were able to live better lives than they had under the old feudal system.

The environment was extremely unsanitary, as proven by the open sewers and garbage dumped in the river Thames(in England). Some common diseases are listed below: dysentery malaria diphtheria flu Typhoid smallpox leprosy And an obvious one is the Black Plague- Caused by fleas carried by rats. The Black Plague took a third of England's population.
