H J Whitley had the first electric lit sign in Hollywood which read Whitley Heights. It was so successful in advertising the land he had for sale that he suggested to his business partner, Harry Chandler, owner of the Los Angeles Times that he put up a sign on his Hollywood land that he needed to sell. The sign read Hollywoodland and was only going to be there for a year. The arrival and growth of the movie industry changed that.

The sign originally read "HOLLYWOODLAND", and its purpose was to advertise a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles by developer H.J. Whitley. The sign was officially dedicated on 13 July 1923. It was not intended to be permanent. Restoration company Bay Cal Painting says on its website that the expected life was to be about a year and a half, but after the rise of the American cinema in Los Angeles it became an internationally recognized symbol, and was left there. The cinema industry had been scattered around the country, chiefly on the east coast and producers were attracted to southern California by a longer filming season due to the ideal weather.
