Some Tatars do follow the Russian Orthodox faith they are a minority, but most of the Tatars in Russia are Sunni muslim.

There are many nationalities in Russia since it's such a big country. There are Bashkirs, Ukranians, Russians, Tatars, Germans, Chechens and Beylorussians. There are over 100 nationalities and minority groups in Russia today.
There are several ethnic groups in Russia that wish to form their own countries. Probably the most vocal and militant are the Chechens in the Caucasus region, but there are also the Circassians, Udmurts, and Tatars among several others.

Russians make up about 80% of the population of Russia. There are many other nationalities living in Russia, although in much smaller numbers. Tatars make up almost 4%, Ukrainians - 2%, Bashkirs, Chuvash, Chechens and Armenians - about 1% each..
The baraba language is spoken by, according to estimates, at least 8,000 Baraba Tatars in the country of Siberia. It is spoken mainly in the Novosibirsk Oblast in Russia.
They were called the "Tatars" because one of the Mongol tribes was of the Tata people.
