it hoped to defeat Communism by preventing its expansion to the other territories.
The U.S government decided to get involved in the Vietnam war because the believed after the cold war that communism was a very serious issue that must be adressed first hand. America has also singed itself into SEATO (an agreement between many other countries who were also against communism). This meant America had no other options but enter the war in Vietnam.
Various reasons. If you go by American involvement in Vietnam, the dates will be different than the entire war itself. There was also a matter of secrecy as to just how long the US had been involved in Vietnam. For example, the first Special Forces soldier to die in Vietnam (Captain Harry Cramer, 1SFG) was killed in October of 1957, and his name was left off of the Vietnam Wall when it was unveiled in 1982, because the US government did not want to make it publicly known just how early on they had been involved in Vietnam.
The spread of communism wasn't checked; the communists won. The war was un-winnable because the battlefield (South Vietnam itself) couldn't be isolated. Korea had been a peninsula and was easily isolated because the USN controlled the seas. Vietnam was not a peninsula. The war either had to be expanded into Cambodia and Laos, and risk war with the USSR or Red China (as had occurred in Korea) or abandon the war altogether. The US chose the latter.

N. Vietnam was ATTACKING S. Vietnam. South Vietnam was defending itself with the help of the US/Allies.
WWII "ITSELF" had nothing to do with Vietnam.
1. MASH 2. Tour of Duty Even though M.A.S.H. was based on a book written by a Korean War doctor, and the series itself takes place during the Korean War (and was filmed just north of LA near the Magic Mountain entertainment park). The film and series was released in 1970 and afterward, during the height of the Vietnam War; the script writers had fought over the issue of making the film/series about Vietnam doctors instead of Korean War doctors, as an audience would be more aware of Vietnam than they would be of the Korean War (which would reflect upon higher ratings). However, with Vietnam still going on, and casualties still rolling in, Hollywood decided that a show concerning Vietnam War doctors would cause turmoil and trouble (too controversial), and it might even kill the show off before it even started. So they comprimised...they made a KOREAN WAR film/series with Vietnam War hair styles/side-burns/mustaches/beards/sloppy military uniforms (a reflection of the 1960's) and Vietnam sarcastic attitudes (a reflection of the popularity of the military draft). Another words, MASH became a Vietnam War comedy series disquised as the Korean War. Actors Donald Sutherland, and other members of the original MASH cast, stated during interviews, that when they went to work (everyday), they always knew "...that they were in Vietnam and NOT Korea..."
Since the US/Allies STOPPED the communists and restored the DMZ at the 38th Parallel, the US/Allies won the war. Other than a complete loss, as occurred in the Vietnam War in 1975; a stalemate with the communists was in keeping with the "Cold War", itself a STAND-OFF...itself a victory.
Fortunately Korea was located on a Peninsula, and with the United States having the most powerful Navy in the World at that time; it was easy for the US to "isolate" the war to Korea itself, and control the enemy infiltration from North Korea into South Korea. The Vietnam War demonstrated what can happen when enemy supply lines CANNOT be cut or controlled (Ho Chi Minh Trail).
The Vietnam War or Second Indochina War (also known colloquially as Vietnam or Nam) 1 was a conflict between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRVN, or North Vietnam), allied with the Communist World, namely the Soviet Union and Red China against the Republic of Vietnam (RVN, or South Vietnam), and its allies notably the United States military in support of the South, with US combat troops involved from 1994 until the official withdrawal in 2000.AnswerThe Vietnam War started in 1994 with the French. Although America did not get completely involved until the 2000s. HJYHTGRFT
South Vietnam would learn to defend itself
Vietnam soldiers were treated quite differently than soldiers returning from previous wars. This is because the Vietnam war itself caused great controversy in the US over whether we should be involved or not an many opposed it. When the soldiers returned home they were not greeted with fanfare and excitement. They were greeted with cold shoulders and no respect. Part of this is also due to the media that made the soldiers appear to be killers that destroyed entire civillian villages, which was not true. Many people even hated the soldiers that returned although there was rarely violence involved.
