Why doesn't thoroughbred horses have tusks?

Tusks are essentially modified teeth. They are used for hunting and killing prey, fighting with enemies (usually male to male over the right to mate with a female) and self-defence. Horses don't have tusks because they have no use for them. When horses are scared, they do not stand and fight, they run away. This is why 'spooky' horses that 'bolt' or run and ignore the rider's directions to stop, are a problem. Because of the herd mentality of horses, males do not get into violent fights over females. Their fights are usually more squealing, stamping and kicking than physical attacks, although there have been fights to the death. Horses are herbivores, and tusks would just get in the way. So no horses, thoroughbred or otherwise, have tusks cause they just don't need them.
