It is called WikiAnswers because it is a wiki-based site that is owned by Answers. A wiki site is a community driven site where nearly anyone can edit the content. In its perfect form, the wiki concept cuts bureaucracy and lets users' changes appear immediately. Answers once used a subscription model where people could pay to get staff to answer questions.
