The small sizes of the period 2 elements(elts) give them the unique abilities such as they turn to have lower electron affinity(E.A) values than the periods 3 elts e.g the E.A for F< that for Cl not as expected for the E.A trend decreases down the group this is associated to the small size of the periods 2 elts because their small sizes cause electron-electron repulsion.

Their small sizes also enables them to form covalent bonds on like their heaver elts in the same group that form ionic bonds e.g Li+ Cl- forms a covalent bond because due to the small size of the Li+ it distort the electron cloud around Cl- hence forming a covalent bond which is polar and can be dissolved in a polar solvent
