Matthew 14:22-33 (New International Version)Jesus Walks on the Water

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
27But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
28"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
29"Come," he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

Scholars have established that the first New Testament was the gospel now known as Mark's Gospel, and that this was the source for the other gospels that wrote about Jesus walking on water. The account is in Mark 6:45-54, copied in Matthew 14:22-33 and John 6:22-71. It is part of Luke's 'Missing Block' and is therefore not reported in Luke's Gospel. In Mark 6:33-8:21, we can see a contiguous series of miracles and discourses with at least ten references or allusions to food, with a theme of the disciples not understanding. The miracle of Jesus walking on water is one of these:

  • Jesus and the disciples had no leisure so much as to eat, so they went into a desert place
  • Feeding the 5000
  • When Jesus walked on water the disciples were amazed, for they considered not the miracle of the loaves
  • Pharisees complain about the disciples eating with unwashed hands
  • Discourse - what goes into a man goes into his belly and does not defile
  • Greek woman metaphorically begs for crumbs from the table
  • Feeding the 4000
  • Disciples are hungry and have only one loaf of bread - a similar situation to the two feedings of thousands
  • Jesus warns the disciples about the leaven of the Pharisees and they reason, "It is because we have no bread," showing they do not understand
  • Summary by Jesus of the two feasts, asking again, "Why is it that ye do not understand?"

This passage looks backwards to the feeding of the five thousand and forwards, along with the other miracles and discourses, to verse 8:21 when Jesus again asks, "Why is it ye do not understand?" The reader has become very aware that the disciples do not understand, and this awareness is carried forward in the parallel structure that forms the framework of Mark, to the matching event, the Last Supper (a parallel structure is a circular sequence in which an opening set of events is contrasted with another, parallel set of events that mirrors the first, using association for emphasis and to develop themes that would not otherwise be apparent):A .
