Russell and Auckland
Russell, New Zealand (the renamed town of Okiato) was briefly the capital in 1840. It is located 5 km south of the current town of Russell (formerly Kororareka), the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand. In 1841,the capital was established at Auckland, on the western coast of North Island, and in 1865 moved to Wellington (formerly Port Nicholson).
Before Wellington became the capital of New Zealand, the capital was in Old Russell, which was later renamed Okiato. The American political building there was known as the "Government House," which was used as the official residence of the Governor. However, the capital was moved to Wellington in 1865 due to its more central location and better harbor facilities.
Before Wellington, Auckland was the capital of New Zealand. When worried about the gold miners in the south island breaking off and forming a colony, it was decided to shift the capital. Independent observers from Australia (who would be neutral) decided that Wellington was the best pick, based on it's location and harbour. Wellington is situated at the bottom of the north island, making it near the centre of the country.
The first capital of New Zealand was Russell. William Hobson purchased land at Okiato with the primary intent of establishing the country's first capital. It was named Russell in 1840 and the name was later transferred to Kororāreka, few miles north. The capital was moved to Auckland in 1841. Soon after this, the settlement at Okiato was burned to the ground.
