In most animals cells that carry out the same function form structures called tissues. An organ is a group of tissues working together for a common function.

Sponges can be said to show some cell differentiation (and therefore have tissues). The porifera (the phylum containing sponges) are some of the most ancestral animals on the planet and only have two cell types. One makes up the soma (the body) and the other the germ line (a reproductive system). Interestingly, these cells have the ability to self-recognise which was important in the evolution of multicellularity. So, if you put a sponge through a blender if will eventually rearrange itself back into its original form. (Please don't try this with your pet hamster - it definitely won't work!)

Which animal phylum has the lowest structural organisazation?

The phylum Porifera, which includes sponges, has the lowest structural organization among animal phyla. Sponges lack true tissues and organs, instead consisting of loosely organized cell layers that perform basic functions like feeding and reproduction.

Do sponges have nerves?

No sponges lack organized multicellular organs, such as nerves and muscles.

What is the only animal phylum that does not have tissues and symmetry?

The phylum Porifera (sponges) is the only animal phylum that lacks true tissues and symmetry. Sponges are simple multicellular organisms with specialized cells, but they do not have tissues that are organized into distinct structures like other animals. Additionally, sponges exhibit asymmetry rather than bilateral or radial symmetry found in other phyla.

Are mushrooms and sponges fungi?

Mushrooms and toadstools are examples of fungi. Sponges are animals of the phylum Porifera. In biological terms, fungi form a kingdom. Plants have a separate kingdom. Animals have a separate kingdom.
