True ribs attach with the cartilage that is a direct bridge to the sternum; they are called true ribs or vertebro-sternal ribs

The false ribs just attach to cartilage that bind into one link or bridge that connects with the sternum (almost looks like a little web)

A "True" rib means that the rib bone is directly connected to the sternum and vertebral column. The top seven ribs are true ribs. The cartilage of true rib is directly connected to sternum (not attached to the cartilage of other ribs).

A "False" rib means that the rib is not connected to the sternum directly. The bottom five ribs are false ribs. The costal cartilage of a false rib is attached to the cartilage of upper rib and then connected to the sternum (therefore the false ribs are indirectly connected to the sternum). Floating ribs (ribs that are not connected to sternum) are also considered false ribs.

The first seven pairs of ribs are true ribs. The next three pairs (five pairs if you include two pairs of floating ribs) are false ribs. Last two pairs of ribs are floating ribs.

the first seven pairs called the true ribs or vertebrosternal ribs and are attached directly to the sternum by their "own" coastal cartilage. the next five pairs are called false ribs and they are attached indirectly to the sternum
