An ionic bond is when one or more electrons are transfered from one atom to another. A covalent bond is when atoms share one or more electrons. The atom Hydrogen would need only 2 electrons but most need 8.

Ionic compounds are formed by the complete transfer of electrons. Covalent compounds are formed by the sharing of electrons.

In addition, if the difference in electronegativities between the two atoms forming bond is above 1.7, then an ionic bond is formed. Covalent bond is formed if the difference in electronegativities is below 1.7.
