An internal modem is virtually a card that plugs into a board inside of your computer.

It has no lights & is powered by the computer's power transformer....

An external modem is a stand alone unit which usually requires an independent power source i.e. a small transformer that plugs into a power socket.

It is different to an internal modem in that it provides visual indication, via lights , which indicate the status of your connection...... this can be handy when eliminating computer connection faults. It is also the more expensive of the two for those reasons.
