physical change
You change one state of matter to another by heating the matter or cooling it [aka] adding energy or removing the energy
That is done by either heating or cooling.
a matter can be changed through heating and heat is the main cause of changes in matter like turning water to ice and turning water vapor to liquid water.......
Thermometer is based on the expansion of matter as temperature increases.
While a chemical change in an object can lead to its expansion, Take a piece of iron rusting for example, the same piece of iron could expand as a result of it being heated. So it would be reasonable to say neither. expansion is an increase of volume or area being taken up .

For example heating lead to melting and boiling - changes of matter phases.
By heating or freezing.
Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature.

Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to change in temperature. During thermal expansion, the density of a substance decreases as its volume increases. Volume is the space occupied by a body. So, when a substance expands on heating, it will occupy more space or will have more volume. But its mass does not change because the amount of matter contained in a body cannot change. Therefore, mass divided by increased volume gives a decreased density.

Heating and cooling change the state of the matter. For example, at room temperature water is a liquid but if you heated it becomes steam; a gas. If you freeze it it becomes ice; a solid. Hope it helps xx

the matter always stays the same, expansion and contraction just means the matter is becoming more/less spread out from one another. A change in the state of matter is turning from solid-liquid-gas. The amount of matter always stays the same!
