Germany's first U-boat, U1, was taken from a group of 4 or 5 subs bound for Russia (sold to Russia) during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. U1 was commissioned into the German Navy in 1906. U1 was 139 feet long, displacing roughly 238 tons, and stayed in service until about 1919. U1 was fully operational and functioned just fine.
