The first policewoman in the U.S. was Alice Stebbins Wells, appointed by the Los Angeles Police Department in 1910. Although women may have had limited arrest powers in a few cities before 1910, Mrs. Wells was the first "policewoman," and cities nationwide soon followed LAPD's lead. By 1912, for instance, Seattle had five policewomen.
