At the Full Moon, the Moon is on the side of Earth that is opposite from the Sun (i.e. behind the Earth as viewed from the Sun), so that the face of the Moon that we see is the half that is illuminated by the Sun.

At any other time, we see "phases" of the Moon, because the Sun is illuminating part of the "far side", the face of the Moon that is never seen from Earth.
