Ozone layer formation was a natural process in which oxygen was converted to ozone by UV radiations. It is located about 20 to 30 kilometres (12 to 19 mi) above Earth, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically.

Antarctica.

The industrial use of freon gases, or CFCs, led to an alarming reduction in the world's ozone layer, most notable over Antarctica, where it became nonexistent during the winter months, hence the description of a 'hole' in the ozone layer. The effect was so apparent, so rapid and so dramatic, that the world's governments took action in the late 1980s to ban the production of these gases, except for restricted medical use. The hole in Antarctica's ozone layer has improved very noticeably but will take quite a few more years to disappear entirely.
