Nucleotides are the monomer units that make up a DNA molecule. DNA nucleotides are composed of a deoxyribose sugar, a nitrogenous base, and a phosphate group.
When a cell needs to make a certain protein, it gets the directions from the nucleotides in DNA, which contain the genetic code. This process begins with transcription, where a specific segment of DNA is copied into messenger RNA (mRNA). The mRNA then carries the instructions to the ribosomes, where translation occurs, and the corresponding amino acids are assembled to form the protein.
Segments of DNA that contain instructions to make proteins are called genes. Genes are transcribed into mRNA, which is then translated into proteins by the cell's machinery. Each gene codes for a specific protein, and the sequence of nucleotides in the gene determines the sequence of amino acids in the protein.
