Greetings; The internet is just what it says; "Internet"Internetworking involves linking two or more computer networks by way of gateways using a widespread routing technology. The product is called an internetwork (often shortened to internet). The most prominent example of internetworking is the Internet, a network of networks based on numerous underlying hardware technologies, but combined by an internetworking protocol standard, the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). http://en.wikipedia.org The Internet is neither a Public nor Private Network, but can be categorized as both. It is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scale. If a private network wishes to connect to the Internet, it must use either a Network Address Translation (NAT) gateway, proxy server. Private and Public networks obtain access to the internet through ISPs (Internet Service Providers) that provide a direct connection from the Private or Public Networks to the Internet. The connectivity can be through a variety of technologies ranging from dial-up using a landline telephone and modem to Wi-Fi and handheld devices (Smartphone's, game console, etc.). ISPs themselves are connected to one another through Network Access Points (NAPs). TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is the basic communication language or protocol of the Internet. It can also be used as a communications protocol in a private network (either an intranet or an extranet) when a Private Network sets up access to the Internet using a Private Internet Exchange which is a type of secure hardware firewall developed by Cisco Systems. It will translate network addresses, so the internal network can use IP addresses of its own choosing without worrying about clashes with IP addresses in the worldwide Internet.
