Every ecosystem has a carrying capacity, which is the maximum number of organisms that particular ecosystem can sustain for an indefinite period of time. The precise number of organisms varies with the ecosystem, for example a rain-forest could sustain more animals that a desert of the same size, though it's really hard to predict an exact number. The number of organisms living in an ecosystem will constantly change due to death, birth, immigration and emigration, so the number of animals living in an ecosystem can shift higher or lower than the maximum carrying capacity. Although, generally, if it is higher than the carrying capacity, animals will either die as the ecosystem cannot support them, or emigrate to somewhere new, depending on the habits of that particular organism. Meaning there could be no resources (food, water, shelter) and all of the organisms that can't find these things due to being weaker than the others will die, until the ecosystem is under the carrying capacity.
