The Romans were Latins. Therefore they spoke Latin. Latin was was the lingua franca of the Roman Empire and the language of officials around the empire and the law. The various peoples who lived in the empire spoke their own languages: Celtic languages, Iberian languages, Berber, Illyrian languages, Thracian, Syriac, Phoenician, Hebrew , Egyptian, etc. In the eastern Mediterranean Greek was another lingua franca. This was because before the Romans it was ruled by Greek states: the Seleucid Empire in much of Turkey and in Syria and Lebanon and Judea and the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt and Judea. The education of the rich in Rome was in both Latin and Greek and Roman elite men were fluent in Greek and sometimes spoke yo each other in Greek.
