There are large sand dunes located all over the world. Some of the largest dunes are located in France, China, Colorado, Namibia, Algeria, and Australia.
Huge piles of sand are called sand dunes. Sand dunes typically form in deserts or coastal areas where there are strong winds that shape and move the sand into these large structures.
The largest sand dunes in the world are found in the Namib Desert in Namibia, specifically in the Sossusvlei area. These dunes, known as "star dunes," can reach heights of over 1,000 feet (about 300 meters). Dune 7, one of the tallest in the region, is often cited as the highest accessible dune for visitors. The striking red color of the dunes is due to the iron oxide present in the sand.
There are only two sand dunes in Michigan. The two sand dunes are Sleeping Bear Dunes and Sliver lake sand dunes.
The state with the largest sand dunes complex in the U.S. is Colorado, specifically the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. This park is located just north of the Rio Grande River, which is named for its flatness in Spanish. The dunes are renowned for their impressive height and unique geological features.
