The word "scribble" has a short vowel sound, specifically the "i" in "scribble" is pronounced with a short /ɪ/ sound.
Cross-hatching and stippling are techniques usually found in ink drawing and etching. Cross-hatching is the creating of two sets of hatch marks (slash-type marks/lines, either parallel or curving along the form) so that they make an X-pattern or grid. Stippling is the method of applying a field of dots. The denser the field, the darker the area appears. The eye "blends" these, more smoothly as it gets farther and farther away from the drawing. This is known as "optical blending." Good examples of this are old newpaper photographs or the paintings of George Seurat. Actual "blending" is usually to describe the smearing of malleable media, such as paint or pastels, so that transitions are made significantly smoother. It's achieved by rubbing or smudging two adjacent areas with a brush or finger.
