Rectus is a Latin word that means straight. This means that the muscle is usually straight, as in the rectus abdominis.
The name 'rectus' means straight while femoris refers to the thigh. So, it refers to the straight muscle of the thigh, which is a member of the quadriceps femoris.

Latissimus dorsi is better thanslated as "widest (muscle) of the back".
The stapedius muscle gets its name from the bone that it is attached to called the stapes. It means stirrup. It is located in the middle ear.
