In our solar system the planets (other than ours) are named after Greek and Roman deities. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Far beyond our solar system are other star systems orbited by planets known as "exoplanets." These are generally named after the primary (star) and then a sequence letter, or they are named after the satellite which observed them plus some catalog number. There are thousands of these so far.
The name of all the nine planets (including pluto) are:
1) Mercury
2)Venus
3)Earth
4)Jupiter
5)Mars
6)Saturn
7)Uranus
8)Neptune
9)Pluto
These are all the planets for sure.
As of 2017, there are either 8 or 13 planets in our solar system, depending on whether you count major planets only, or all planets. Based on the second list below, Neptune is the 9th planet.
The 8 major known planets in order from the Sun are:
1. Mercury
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Jupiter
6. Saturn
7. Uranus
8. Neptune
If you list ALL 13 known planets in order, including dwarf planets, they are:
1. Mercury
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Ceres
6. Jupiter
7. Saturn
8. Uranus
9. Neptune
10. Pluto
11. Haumea
12. Makemake
13. Eris
Dwarf planets also fall under the category of minor planets, of which there are thousands in our solar system. As of 2017, the orbits of 734,274 minor planets were archived at the Minor Planet Center, 496,815 of which had received permanent numbers. The largest minor planet that is not considered to be a dwarf planet is Sedna.
Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto used to be known as the ninth planet of the solar system but it was officially removed and is now called a dwarf planet.
Terrestrial Planets, or Rocky Planets
Another name for the terrestrial planets is the inner planets. There are four terrestrial planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.
