Malaria is caused by organisms of the genus Plasmodium, a parasite that infects human red blood cells.

There are 3 different eukaryotic organisms from the genus Plasmodium that are responsible for the contraction of malaria. These are:

  • Plasmodium vivax
  • Plasmodium ovale
  • Plasmodium malariae
  • Plasmodium falciparum

Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax are the most common, however Plasmodium falciparum is the most deadly.

Note, the parasite is carried and transferred to us by mosquito bites.
