The best opening is to situate the story: time, place, general ambiance. This is called the exposition. You can read the first paragraphs of several stories in a story magazine, or several books on the shelf, and from them decide whether this time, this place and the general tenor of the story is interesting to you. Then, when you open your story, you can follow the pattern and engage readers early.
