It is just east of the Wassatch Range, in a geologic feature known as the basin and range. The Great Salt Lake is in a huge basin that has no drainage. This is why it is as salty as it is.
The Rocky Mountains are located west of the Great Plains and east of the Basin and Range region in the western United States. This mountain range extends from Canada to New Mexico and is known for its rugged terrain and diverse ecosystems.

Water in the Great Artesian Basin is replenished by rainfall which seeps down through the permeable sandstone aquifers. These aquifers are located primarily along the eastern edge of the Basin, which is the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range.
