A Primary source is information directly from the source. A Secondary source is infomation from other source.

A primary source was written or created in the relevant time period or a person who experienced that time and relevant event(s). A Secondary Source is normally one who did not participate in relevant events but rather one who is commenting on or reporting what was learned from Primary Sources.

Secondary data allows you to look at existing research to either prove or disprove an hypothesis. Before using this data, it is important to ask about the study's sampling and unit of analysis, the levels of measurement used, and the variables used.

When studying history, it's important to recognize whether one is reading about an event from a secondary source or a primary one. Generally speaking a primary source is more accurate then secondary ones. Here's an example concerning the history of the US Civil War. An author has collected newspapers articles that taken as a whole put together the aspects of a major battle. The researcher does not know for sure whether the collection of these newspaper articles is as close as one can get about the battle. On the other hand, if one reads the book of US General Grant, detailing the how he commanded his troops in that battle, and what the results were. His account is more reliable. He is writing about a battle he himself commanded for the Union. The collection of 1863 newspaper articles on the same battle are from reporters or from people that were interviewed by the reporters. Since Grant was staking his reputation on the event, that many other soldiers witnessed, he as a primary source, is vital for accuracy and reasons why certain things happened in that battle. The newspapers may or may not be accurate, and certainly are secondary in various aspects of the battle.
