Counter Reformation 16th-century reformation that arose largely in answer to the Protestant Reformation; sometimes called the Catholic Reformation. Although the Roman Catholic reformers shared the Protestants' revulsion at the corrupt conditions in the church, there was present none of the tradition breaking that characterized Protestantism. The Protestant Reformation started primarily because of the actions of Martin Luther. Luther challenged the validity of the Catholic church, while believing its rules and principles to be both harsh and rigid. Luther and his supporters "protested" against the Church and its doctrines. This led to the reformation and the creation of the Protestant sect and faith.

The Renaissance and reformation were times of scientific innovation. Before the Renaissance trade routes were limited because of poor roads and small, inefficient ships.
