Rutherford came up with the basic structure of an atom using his gold foil experiment. He shot alpha particles(hydrogen nuclei) at a peice of gold foil and watched the results. He found from this experiment that the atom contains a dense, positively charged nucleus, negative particles in "electron clouds" and is made up of mostly empty space.

E. Rutherford developed his atomic model due to the results of his gold foil experiment. His atomic model describes a small central, dense core and a surrounding volume of charged particles.
Ernest Rutherford suggested that most of the mass of the atom is located in the nucleus. He came to this conclusion after finding the results on his famous gold foil experiment. This is where he fired radio active particles through very thin metal foils, and detected them using screens covered in zinc sulphide.
Anybody who knows much about atoms and is willing to ignore virtual particles. The credit for actually discovering this should probably go to Rutherford. (Or Rutherford, Geiger, and Marsden ... Geiger and Marsden actually did the experiment in Rutherford's lab, and Rutherford was the one who explained the results.)

In 1911, Rutherford decided to experiment using what was the current theory of atomic structure at the time. Based on his results, he proposed a new theory; that the majority of the atom is empty space, and that all of the positive and most of the mass are contained in a small central region within the atom, which became later known as the nucleus.
they are both green on the periodic table of elements.... the alpha particles would follow the sam pattern. when the aluminum has a greater charge the particles would have a strong bend.
They used a vacuum because the air particles in normal conditions would interfere with the trajectory of the Alpha particles, thus disrupting results.
