Freedom of Association is a right by natural law. However, the scale and level to which it may be practiced in actuality is dependent on the statutory and even social laws that govern ones domicile. Freedom of Association is often referred to and used interchangeably with the natural rights of free speech and assembly also.

It can be derived from the 1st and 2nd Amendment protections of speech, religion, assembly, redress, bearing of arms, and maintaining a regulated civilian militia. Each of these 1st and 2nd Amendment enumerated rights are forms of association by definition and thus protected.
