The Bill of Rights protects individuals liberties. The first amendment protects freedom of speech and religion. The second amendment gives individuals the right to own firearms if they choose to.
The Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments

If you want to be more specific, the first amendment protects the individual's right to freedom of speech, religion, and to question the government's authority by petitioning and assembling peaceful protests.
