The theory that explains how nation-states may have started when people were compelled to accept the rule of a strong individual is known as the "social contract theory." This theory suggests that in order to secure protection and stability, individuals agreed to surrender some of their freedom and submit to the authority of a central governing power. This process led to the establishment of nation-states.

Do you mean nation states as in, for example, Japan? A state is a political entity with recognize borders, which may be comprised of any people, while a nation is a group of people and does not have such borders. A nation state, therefore, is a group of the same people with officially recognize borders. Nation states would be represented on maps because they have official borders. As far as a nation of people is concerned, I have no idea. I do not know what you mean by "people" not being shown on a map. There are some maps which show the average number of people per square mile/kilometer though.
john Locke's social contract theory states that people consent to be governed by a society's government. The government must also protect the people's rights.
