D-Day was necessary for allied forces to gain a foot hold in Europe in order to attack and defeat German forces which ended WW2
this is a very debatable question but in my opinion, no. if the U.S. stayed neutral during ww2 then hitlers forces would have overpowered the allied forces in Europe. it was the Americans and their bravery that won ww2. not to mention that Americans don't let someone get away with attacking a naval base without any consequences.
