Can you interpret 'Agony' by Arshile Gorky?

Agony endeavors to make an emotional and aesthetic statement about pain and personal violation. It does this by using techniques usually called Surrealist or Abstract Expressionist, in dong so it makes its statement abstractly, letting the very action of painting tell part of the story. Gorky suffered a severe illness, which was finally diagnosed as colon cancer. The operation had a profound effect on his attitude towards his own body. The shapes in this painting suggest bodily organs and living tissue, oftern called "biomorphic" abstraction, also the red palette is suggestive of blood. The tall assemblage seems to be shrieking in protest. Though many of Gorky's paintings are lyric and cheerful, this one seems to evoke a painful despair, somewhat transfigured by the beauty of its painterly surface.
