The temperature rises to 84 degrees but the thermostat is set to 74 the thermostat was changed a year ago and a friend of ours just changed the relays switch What else could be possibly wrong?

It could be one of several things...
1. Check that it is the correct thermostat for the unit. It may require one that is a millivolt thermostat.
2. Check that the thermostat is level if it is a Mercury switch. use a torpedo level
3. Check the amp draw on the heating element.
4. Check continuity through the coil.
5. Check high limit switch is operating properly.
6 Check wiring for polarity on the relay.
7. Check the wiring diagram to ensure all wires are in the right places.
8. Put the old thermostat back and see if the problem is still there.
I'm an installer, I've swapped out electric furnaces because of this issue.
