An organism that uses oxygen to break down food to obtain energy is known as an aerobic organism. Most animals, including humans, and many plants and fungi are aerobic organisms. In contrast, anaerobic organisms obtain energy without using oxygen.
Anaerobic organisms, such as certain bacteria and archaea, metabolize food to make energy in the absence of oxygen through a process called anaerobic respiration or fermentation. These organisms have adapted to survive in low-oxygen environments by using alternative electron acceptors to produce ATP.
