One method of stating an exact location that is becoming very common with more people, due to the new "GPS" navigation units becoming so affordable, is the latitude and longitude, "GPS" coordinates of a global location.

The coordinates express the position in relation to the latitude / longitude global grid:

DMS Degrees:Minutes:Seconds (49°30'02"N, 123°30'30"W) or (49d30m02.5s, -123d30m30.17s)

Latitude: Horizontal lines - states position north or south of the equator

Longitude: Verticle lines - states position relative to the 'meridian', Greenwich England, and establishes the east / west location

From Garmin's website:

"The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.
