Leap Years in the Gregorian calendar (named for Pope Gregory, who made it official) occur every 4 years, in year numbers that are evenly divisible by 4. So 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 are all leap years.
There are two exceptions.
1. For "century" years, those that are divisible by 100, these are NOT leap years. So 1900 was not a leap year, and 2100 will not be. Remember that; many of you will live to see this. Your children very probably will.
2. For century years that are divisible by 400, these ARE leap years even though point #1 says that they would not be. So 2000 was a leap year, and the year 2400 will be even though none of us will be around to see it.
