This is the Greek letter Lamda, which is Volvo's name for their O2 sensor based emissions control system. In newer Volvos you'll usually get a "Check Engine" code first, so don't ignore it, because when the Lamda light comes on you need to fix it ASAP!

And if you look at a 'red' sweater through a blue filter, the sweater looks black.
