For the most convenience, you should consider replacing two switches with just one switch that does both tasks. The first thing to do before repairing anything electrical is turn off the electricity to that room, then repair or replace the switch as you would any other light switch.
When a switch is open (wires not connected) it is considered off. When a switch is closed it is considered on. If you move a switch and the wires are not connected the the circuit is open and current cannot run throughout the circuit to power the device.

NEVER attempt to repair air bags. They are dangerous and can KILL YOU. Replace them and have them certified by the manufacturer(dealer). If it is a switch, take it to a dealer to repair. I have to add,,,,if you do attempt to repair the switch and power is applied and the air bags blow, you CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR.

The neutral safety switch and backup light switch are one in the same. You have to replace it. It is located on the transmission where the shifter connects to it.

Remove the fuse from a/c circuit and then replace or repair your switch.
